• Carleton College in Northfield, MN offers cold winters but itself is an intellectual hothouse. The faculty are committed to teaching and are generous with their time and efforts. This is indeed a superb place to go to school. Getting admitted requires top academic qualifications. Expect to work extremely hard; however, the environment is not at all cutthroat. Pay special note to the mathematics department; it is extremely good.
• Davidson College in Davidson, NC is not far from Charlotte, NC. This is an excellent undergraduate institution and its faculty are dedicated to undergraduate education. Pay special note to the classical studiesdepartment and to the special internship program in the psychology department. This school takes liberal arts education very seriously. The student body tends to be a little conservative politically.
• Grinell College in Grinnell, Iowa is an excellent liberal arts college.
• Harvey Mudd College is a special school for those interested in engineering, mathematics, science and computer science. It is part of the Claremont Colleges.
• New College of Florida in Sarasota, FL is the honors college of the University of Florida System. The faculty at New College are extremely good and are very dedicated to the students. However, this school is not for everyone. Its enrollment is less than 600; some may find this socially confining.
• Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, IN offers high-quality programs in science, engineering and computer science solely to undergraduates. This school is very focused on science and engineering, and is best for students who are very focused on that choice.
• Swarthmore College is situated in beautiful Swarthmore, PA. The town is simply beautiful and the campus grounds and gardens are nothing short of spectacular. However, beauty runs more than skin-deep here. This school is an academic powerhouse and sends many students on to professional careers and graduate school. The academic atmosphere is very intense, and some report it to be quite stressful. In the end, if you prosper here, you will have an excellent education.
